Lash Lift vs Lash Extensions: How to Advise Clients Who Want Both

The Question Every Lash Artist Gets Asked
"I'm interested in both extensions and a Lash Lift, but which one should I do first?"
This is a question you may have been asked at your salon.
In this post, we're sharing one way of thinking about this question, and one example of how you might guide a client, for anyone who isn't sure how to answer it. Please take this as just one perspective, not a definitive answer.
Lash Lift vs Lash Extensions: A Quick Refresher

As a quick refresher, extensions are applied individually to the natural lashes with glue, adding length and volume. A Lash Lift curls the client's own natural lashes for a soft, natural finish. The look, feel, and maintenance schedule differ between the two, so which one suits a client best often comes down to their personal preference and lifestyle.
What to Recommend When a Client Wants Both
For clients interested in both, some salons choose to suggest trying extensions first.
Why Extensions Should Come First
The reasoning comes down to flexibility afterwards.
If a client tries extensions first:
If they later feel "actually, I think I'd prefer a Lash Lift instead," extensions can be removed straight away
Once removed, they can move on to a Lash Lift right away
Why Starting With a Lash Lift Can Delay Extensions (~2 Months)
On the other hand, if a client tries a Lash Lift first:
They'll need to wait around 2 months for the lift's curl to fully relax
Without this waiting period, extensions can't be applied neatly or safely
If the client then decides they want to try extensions too, they can't be accommodated straight away, and end up having to wait
In other words, how easily a client can change their mind afterwards is one factor worth considering when deciding what to suggest first.
How to Explain This to Your Clients

Rather than framing it as "which one is better," one approach is to simply explain that
"if you want to try both, starting with extensions gives you more flexibility to switch later."
Sharing the technical reasoning behind the suggestion can help clients feel more confident in the recommendation.
Key Takeaway for Lash Artists
There's no single correct way to answer when a client asks "which should I do, extensions or a Lash Lift?" but considering flexibility for future treatments is one useful factor, and we hope this example is helpful as one reference point for your own client consultations.
