What Is the LED Lash Extension Method?

What Is the LED Lash Extension Method?
"So, what’s the difference between LED lash extensions and regular ones?"

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we hear from clients in the salon.

And if you’ve found yourself reading this article, you might also be wondering the same — it’s totally normal to feel unsure at first!

When I first heard about it, I was unsure too."Does it really last longer, even if you use oil-based skincare products?!"

But after introducing it to the salon, seeing client reactions and how well the lashes lasted, I came to realise:

LED technology is something every Lash Artist should know about.

In this post, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about LED lash extensions — from salon-ready tips to practical insights — all from a Lash Artist’s perspective.

LED Lash Extensions: Key Things to Know First

What Is the LED Lash Extension Method?

The first thing to understand is this:

LED lash extensions use a special glue that hardens instantly when exposed to LED light.

▼Here are three key terms to know if you're new to the technique:

• LED Lash Extensions

A new generation of lash application using LED light. It eliminates the need for "curing time", making the process quicker and more stable.

• LED Lash Glue

A specially formulated adhesive that cures under LED light. Unlike traditional lash glue, it is less affected by room humidity or moisture levels.

• LED Curing

When LED light (usually 365–405nm) is applied for just 2–3 seconds, the glue hardens instantly. This reduces lash stickiness and speeds up treatment time.

Compared to traditional lash glue, which can take up to 8 hours to fully cure through exposure to moisture in the air, LED glue is a real game-changer.

With LED curing, lashes are fully set the moment the light hits them. It gives you more consistent results and speeds up your process. It’s truly a time-saving and reliable technique for lash artists.

Many of our clients now say, "Once you’ve tried LED, you can’t go back!"

Understanding the Mechanism and Safety of LED Lash Extensions

Mechanism and Safety of LED Lash Extensions

Let’s break down what professionals actually care about when it comes to LED lash extensions in three key areas:

① What does “curing with LED” actually mean?

Once you try LED lash extensions, you’ll instantly notice two things: speed and confidence in the outcome.

LED lash glue is specially designed to cure instantly under a specific range of light, typically between 365–405 nm. The glue polymerises in response to the light, creating a strong and clean bond in just seconds.

▶ This process is known as photopolymerisation.

By contrast, traditional lash glue hardens slowly as it reacts with moisture in the air or on the natural lashes.

▶ That’s called moisture curing.

② Is LED light the same as UV? What about the impact on skin?

This is a very common question from clients:

“Isn’t LED the same as UV? Is it safe around the eyes?”

Here’s what you need to know:

  • LED light used for lash extensions emits very little UV-B or UV-C. Traditional UV lamps emit a broader spectrum, some of which can damage the skin. LED devices target only the required wavelengths, making them far gentler.

  • LEDs activate instantly and can focus light only where needed. This allows for quick, precise curing without prolonged exposure.

At Mai Lashes Brisbane, we asked the manufacturer of our LED device:

“The UV exposure during a 90-minute LED lash session is equivalent to standing outside under a clear umbrella for six minutes.”

As with any beauty technology, safe results come from proper technique and correct use.We always explain this to clients and only recommend LED to those who feel comfortable after learning how it works.

③ What about allergies or irritation?

Some clients feel stinging or discomfort with traditional glue, especially during or right after application.

LED extensions may not be suitable for those with strong allergies, but for those with mild sensitivity, they can offer noticeable relief.

✦ Traditional Glue

• Cures slowly

• Fumes can linger

• Room humidity affects consistency

✦ LED Glue

• Cures instantly under light

• Fumes are minimal

• Many clients report less stinging or watery eyes

“Since switching to LED, my eyes feel so much more comfortable!”

Pros & Cons of LED Lash Extensions

(Including My Real Salon Experience)

There’s a lot of buzz around LED lash extensions — and you’ll often hear they’re “all pros, no cons!”But what’s the reality?

Here’s my honest take, based on real salon use and client feedback.

Benefits of LED Lash Extensions

① Improved Retention

This is one of the biggest advantages. Unlike traditional glue that’s sensitive to humidity and temperature, LED glue cures fully within seconds, no matter the conditions.

“It’s been four weeks, and my lashes still look great!”

② Faster Application Time

LED curing reduces many salon frustrations, like adjusting room humidity or waiting for glue to set. With a 2–3 second curing time per lash, treatments can be up to 15 minutes shorter.

③ Less Irritation for Sensitive Clients

Because glue cures instantly, fumes are reduced, leading to fewer complaints of discomfort. We've seen clients with previous mild sensitivity continue lashes comfortably with LED.

“No more stinging or watery eyes!”

Drawbacks to Consider

① Higher Upfront Costs

  • LED device + setup: A$1,000〜

  • LED glue: More expensive than standard types

But with improved retention and fewer issues, many artists say, “It paid for itself quickly.”

⚠️ Not suitable for clients with UV sensitivity. Always ask during consultation.

② Allergy Risk Still Exists

Unless specifically labelled as cyanoacrylate-free, most LED lash glues do contain cyanoacrylate, so allergies are still possible. Patch testing and client education remain essential.

③ Technique Requires Adjustment

  • Light angle and distance matter

  • The glue amount must be optimised to achieve the best retention

  • Lashes must be fully dry before application

  • Proper wrapping of glue is key

These skills are learnable, but proper training and model practice are a must before offering it as a service.

How to Bring LED Lash Extensions into Your Salon

What to Know Before You Start + Real-World Tips

How to Bring LED Lash Extensions into Your Salon What to Know Before You Start + Real-World Tips

Jumping into LED just because it’s trendy can lead to unexpected issues.

Here’s what we learned from experience — and what we recommend when making the switch:

▶ 1. Choose Reliable LED Equipment

Look for clear specs:

  • Exact wavelength (e.g. 365 or 405 nm)

  • Product safety data

  • Glue compatibility

▶ 2. Train All Staff and Practice with Models

Hands-on training ensures your team can:

  • Handle light direction and timing

  • Adjust glue usage

  • Communicate benefits to clients with confidence

▶ 3. Communicate Clearly with Clients

Taking time to explain why you're using LED — and how it benefits them — helps build trust and confidence in your service.

  • For clients whose lash extensions never seem to last — especially those with oily skin, hooded lids, or who sweat frequently or swim often — LED glue can make a noticeable difference in retention. Let them know they may see far better results with this method.

  • Even for clients who don’t have a full allergy, but still feel slight discomfort or irritation after extensions using traditional moisture-cured glue, LED may be worth trying. We’ve had clients report that their eyes felt much more comfortable after switching to LED glue.

  • Although LED extensions are generally known for better hold than traditional glue, lash growth cycles still apply. To keep the lash line looking clean and even, we recommend infill appointments every 3 weeks, just like with regular lash glue.

▶ 4. Don’t Skip Patch Tests or Consultations

Especially for first-timers or big events, always:

  • Test for glue sensitivity

  • Explain aftercare differences (no 8-hour drying time, oil-proof)

  • Highlight the convenience of LED lashes in daily life

Real-World Results After Switching to LED Lash Extensions

◎ Positive Changes We've Noticed

  • Clients with sensitive skin or early signs of glue allergies have returned for regular appointments after switching to LED. The reduced fumes and instant curing made a huge difference for them.

  • Glue performance is more stable, even on rainy days or in colder weather. No more worrying about lash retention being affected by climate conditions — the results stay consistent.

  • From the lash artist’s side, many say once they got the hang of the LED workflow, the application became smoother and more time-efficient than with traditional glue.

△ Challenges and Learning Moments

  • At first, it was hard to tell if the glue had fully cured. This led to some cases where extensions began shedding within a few days, especially when the light wasn’t angled properly.

  • Early on, we didn’t always remember to apply under-eye protection pads during LED application. There were moments when we almost started the treatment without them — something that’s now a strict part of our routine.

  • In the initial stages, we also mismanaged glue usage: LED glue tends to degrade faster than traditional adhesives. If you don’t wipe the nozzle properly after dispensing, the inner cap can stick, making it difficult to open next time. It really requires more careful handling and storage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Question

Answer

How long does an LED light last?
