Why Volume Lash Fans Become Inconsistent
When performing volume lash treatments, have you ever felt that:
・The fan opens differently every time
・The bases don’t align, making wrapping difficult
・The treatment takes longer than expected
These concerns are very common.
In many cases, this is not a matter of talent or hand skill. Most issues can actually be resolved by improving the reproducibility of the process.
In particular, once the pressure applied when creating the fan on adhesive tape and the pickup angle become consistent, both the final result and working speed improve significantly.
This article explains the “Bounce Method” recommended by Lash Advance, outlining how to use handmade volume lash trays and the key points for creating stable fans quickly and consistently.
The training is led by award-winning lash artist Mai, owner of Mai Lashes Brisbane.
The Conclusion First: The Biggest Reason Fans Become Unstable Is Inconsistent Pressure and Angle

When fans collapse during volume lash application, the causes usually come down to two main factors:
・Insufficient pressure applied to the adhesive tape during the bounce process
・Tweezers lying too flat during pickup, causing the bases to separate easily
Both points affect the initial formation of the fan. Once this stage becomes stable, consistency improves regardless of the number of lashes in the fan or the length being used.
What Is the Bounce Method? Creating Even Fans Quickly by Bouncing Extensions on Adhesive Tape Placed on the Lash Tray

At Lash Advance, the “Bounce Method” is very simple.
・Where to bounce: On adhesive tape placed on the lash tray
・Purpose: To create even fans as quickly as possible
・Result: Consistent fan opening with aligned bases, making wrapping attachment easier
Rather than repeatedly adjusting the fan on the tape, the idea is to shape it correctly in the first attempt. With fewer steps involved, once the form becomes consistent, treatment speed naturally improves.
How to Use Handmade Volume Lash Extensions: The Key Is Not Only Adhesion, but Consistency of Adhesion

ボリュームで「仮毛を変えたらファンが作りやすくなった」また、「ラッピングがしやすくなった」と感じる方が多くいます。
これは仮毛の根本の粘着部分の強さによるものです。
Lash Advance
Many lash artists notice that changing their lash trays suddenly makes fan creation easier or wrapping more stable.
This is often due to the adhesive strength at the base of the lash strip.
One of the main reasons Lash Advance volume lash trays are described as easy to use is the balance of the tape adhesion.
・Not too weak
・Not too strong
・The base stays together during pickup
・The base forms consistently when bouncing
・Wrapping becomes easier during attachment
・Mistakes decrease, workflow becomes smoother, and overall treatment speed improves
If fans do not open properly or spread too much, the issue may not be technique alone.
The adhesion at the base of the lash strip may be inconsistent, causing variation each time the fan is formed.
Simply reassessing the lash tray being used can significantly change the experience for many artists.
Basic Pickup Settings: Once 3–4D Is Stable, It Can Be Applied to Any D’s

Even if 3–4D fans are used most frequently, stabilising the process at this level allows the technique to be applied to higher dimensions.
Common specifications used as a guideline:
・Fan size: Mainly 3–4D (once stable, applicable to any D)
・Thickness: 0.06–0.07
・Tweezers: Boot-shaped tweezers
If fans collapse when increasing the number of lashes, the issue is often not the dimension itself, but changes in pressure and angle as the fan size increases.
Creating a process that can be reproduced the same way every time with 3–4D is ultimately the fastest way to improve stability.
Tip ① The Bounce Pressure Can Be Stronger Than Expected. The Base Should Slightly Flex
The most common mistake with the bounce method is applying too little pressure. If the contact is too gentle, the fan does not open cleanly in one movement and more time is required to adjust it.
A guideline for pressure:
・The bounce pressure can be stronger than expected
・The base of the extensions should feel slightly flexible
However, the goal is not to press hard enough to damage the lashes. The objective is to create the fan in one movement while keeping the opening consistent by maintaining even pressure.
Tip ② Keep the Tweezers Upright During Pickup. A Flatter Angle Makes Attachment More Difficult
Pickup angle is the next important factor.
・Keep the tweezers as upright as possible during pickup
・The flatter the tweezers, the harder it becomes to follow the natural lash angle during attachment
When the tweezers lie too flat, it becomes difficult to align the fan with the direction of the natural lash. As a result, wrapping attachment becomes harder, the base may collapse during placement, and retention can be affected.
Tip ③ Pick Up Carefully After Bouncing. Speed Comes After Consistency
When trying to work faster, it is common to rush the pickup stage.
However, the order of improvement is the opposite.
・Bounce with consistent, firm pressure
・Pick up carefully
・Mistakes decrease
・Redoing work decreases
・Treatment speed increases as a result
Rather than rushing, fixing a process that prevents mistakes is actually the fastest approach in a salon environment.
Tip ④ Tweezer Alignment Is Critical. Even Less Than 1mm of Misalignment Can Affect the Result
An often overlooked factor is the condition of the tweezers themselves.
・If the tweezer tips are not aligned, fans separate easily
・Individual lashes may not be gripped correctly
・Even less than 1mm of misalignment can affect performance
Volume lash work relies on extremely small contact points. If adjusting pressure and angle does not solve the issue, checking the tweezer tips first can often be the quicker solution.
Why Retention Changes: The Importance of Wrapping Attachment

The success rate of wrapping attachment has a significant impact on volume lash retention.
One important factor contributing to successful wrapping is the balanced adhesion of the lash strip mentioned earlier.
When adhesion is balanced, fans open more easily and adhesive can flow between individual lashes more effectively, leading to better wrapping attachment.
In wrapping attachment particularly, even slight irregularity at the base can prevent the fan from sitting correctly, which may lead to discomfort such as a subtle scratching sensation.
・Consistent fan opening
・Aligned bases
・Easier wrapping attachment
・More uniform appearance and improved retention
Being able to reproduce this process every time leads directly to stable results.
